Columbus Day

Christopher Columbus is the Italian explorer, who under the Spanish flag, discovered the Americas. Columbus was a chartmaker; because of this he became convinced that the world is spherical, round, instead of flat. This belief later became the basis for his quest of finding a shorter route to Asia. Columbus’s wanted to find a short trade route to Asia. He was correct in his assumption of the earth being round, but he had no idea there was this large mass of two continents blocking his path. The first recorded celebration of Columbus Day in the United States took place on October 12, 1792. Starting in 1971, Columbus Day was designated a federal holiday as the second Monday in October.

Halloween Party Theme

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). Today, we have Halloween parties and dress up in costumes. A Halloween party can be as elaborate or simple as you like. Try using card board boxes glues together to make a long tube a person can crawl through. Cut holes in the side and add a ghouls design. Now you've created your own haunted house.

Halloween Rock-n-Roll Party

With Halloween just around the corner, now is the time to start planning your Halloween party. A Rock-n-Roll party theme is one of my favorites. This is the one night you can be anyone or anything you want, why not be a star. Have all your guest come as their favorite rock star. Guest can cast a ballot for the best and worst costumes. Give the winners a musical instrument as a prize. Last year I gave away tambourines.

Oktoberfest Party

The first Oktoberfest was not really a festival at all, but the public celebration of the wedding of Crown Prince Luitpold I and Princess Theressa of Bavaria on October 17, 1810. Start planning your celebration now. Oktoberfest is not only an event, it is also a style of beer. An Oktoberfest is brewed very much like the reddish-amber Marzen beer that was served at the Crown Prince's wedding in 1810. Order the kegs ahead of time and don't forget some apple juice for the kids. Traditionally the polka is the dance of Oktoberfest. Need a brush up on your dancing technique, check out some video dance tapes.

Wedding on a Budget

A wise bride has a budget for her wedding. Often brides end up spending more for their wedding dress than they intended. In a shop filled with wedding dresses between $800 and $5,000, a $2,000 price tag can look like a bargain. Determine your budget before you set foot in a bridal shop and stick to it. Here are a few low-budget tips:
~ 1. Embellish an off-the-rack dress. Hire a seamstress to add trimmings, or do it yourself.
~ 2. Wear something borrowed. Have your mother's, grandma's, sister's or aunt's dress fitted to you.
~ 3. Use champagne flute bubbles instead of rice, also they make great wedding favors.
